For our first meeting after vacation we got inspired by some great post-it note art online and the amazing DEADLINE video above. On the 7th, students got graph paper and colored pencils and sketched out a plan for their own post-it note art to be displayed in the many library windows. Those windows are tall and skinny so they had to work with those restrictions. We used 2" x 2" for most designs so they could have more detail in a small space. A few lucky souls got wall space, though the stick is less sticky on paint than on glass. On the 14th, drawings were brought to life.

BMS Nerdfighters worked very hard for weeks on their Project for Awesome videos, so today we celebrated with the annual fake beard and mustache contest. Look at the incredible creativity and inventiveness that comes out of not actually having facial hair. Thanks to the many BMS nerds who participated in the creation of Project for Awesome videos. Watch our submissions below.
There are some major changes to the P4A this year, including the elimination of comment pennies. It used to be that companies matched funds to the number of comments left on P4A videos. That allowed students with no ability to donate money online to still earn money for The Foundation to Decrease World Suck. I'm not sure how invested young people will be now. John Green encourages people to engage in meaningful discussion in the comments, rather than comment spamming, since the number of comments on a video no longer influences a video's rating. We can still choose which organizations will receive money by voting on projectforawesome.com. Go do that from noon on December 12 to noon on December 14.
Nerds spent most of their time researching and writing scripts for their Project for Awesome videos.
Because we only meet one hour a week, it takes a month to make a simple Project for Awesome video. Today was an introduction to the idea. We watched two of the most popular videos on projectforawesome.com, and commented on the power of symbolism in videos. The group came up with huge number of charities and causes that they'd like to support. Now they have to do the hard part: choose. Nerds care about a lot of things. Then we split up to watch more old videos on our own to get inspiration and ideas.
Next week will begin the real planning: research, storyboards, and scripts. After that it's recording footage and voiceovers. Then the final edit.
While talking about some of our favorite books and fan fiction, nerdfighters made page corner bookmarks from the template at Tally's Treasurey.
When JFunke's father died a year ago, he left her all his bow ties. They now live on her desk at school and get regularly borrowed for the day because "bow ties are cool." The nerdfighters gathered together to wear all the bow ties at once to honor the passing of JFunke's father. He would be happy to see the love of bow ties passed on to a new generation.
