Now that the nerds have had some practice, they made more stop motion films. Hank Green was one of three well-known vloggers to interview President Obama this week. Did you know that Obama is not so secretly a nerd and even said DFTBA to John in last year's interview?

After such a positive response to last week's showing of DEADLINE, stop motion animation with post-it notes, we tried making our own stop motion animation videos. First we watched some inspirational examples and a tutorial.
Then we practiced using the iMotion app on the school iPods and students' personal devices. Next week they will bring in their own characters (Lego, figurines, colored paperclips, etc) to develop more complex projects. Look at what they did in just a few minutes.
For our first meeting after vacation we got inspired by some great post-it note art online and the amazing DEADLINE video above. On the 7th, students got graph paper and colored pencils and sketched out a plan for their own post-it note art to be displayed in the many library windows. Those windows are tall and skinny so they had to work with those restrictions. We used 2" x 2" for most designs so they could have more detail in a small space. A few lucky souls got wall space, though the stick is less sticky on paint than on glass. On the 14th, drawings were brought to life. Thanks to the many BMS nerds who participated in the creation of Project for Awesome videos. Watch our submissions below.
Welcome back nerdfighters!Forty-one nerdfighters, new and old, showed up for the first official meeting of the year. That is 1/16 of the whole school that is made of awesome!
After watching the videos there were some announcements:
Then nerds made duct tape bow ties and recorded video introducing themselves, which will be compiled for next week's meeting. If you haven't done it yet, please record yourself saying "My name is ______ and I get nerdy about ________." Then email it to JFunke. You can use a library device if you come in the morning before school. 32 students showed up to the Nerdfighters Club orientation meeting yesterday. Welcome to the 24 new nerds and welcome back to the older nerds who came to help out. After learning the definition of a nerd: “Nerds are people whose unbridled passion for something, or things, defines who they are as a person, without fear of other people’s judgement.” (Zachary Levi) and hearing the rules: 1. Don't be mean |

A few older students spoke about why they come to Nerdfighters Club and how important it is in their lives. The common theme was that it's a place to find like-minded people who share your interests.
The last ten minutes were a frenzy of excitement. A large sheet of paper and some crayons were placed on each table and nerds were given three minutes to write down everything they get nerdy about. They were then given three more minutes to go around to other tables and mark the items they get nerdy about.

Next week, nerds will record their introduction videos and make duct tape bow ties. If you want to get meeting reminders on your phone, send a text with "@bmsnerds" to 413.338.5583. Your phone number will never be shared, even with the teacher.

In honor of the release of the movie version of Divergent by Veronica Roth, we watched the trailer, talked about the book, and took online quizzes to see which faction we should be in. It's a good thing that we are all different and all divergent.
